Tree reaching 16m, but shorter in cultivation
Stem single/branched at base
Huge paddle-shaped leaves form large fans, leaves normally shredded by the wind
Flower bracts & leaf sheaths collect water
Seeds have a bright blue oily covering/aril
Ruffed lemurs are known to pollinate this plant
Should be sown in Spring when the difference between day and night temperatures is about 12°C.
