Please send a copy of your permit to us with a label (Please send us the yellow and green label that is for your closest inspection station).

When can I plant my seeds?
Sowing times for all species have been inserted into the catalogue. At the end of each description, it will say “Sow Spring”, or “Sow Autumn”. These instructions pertain to South African conditions.
The plants marked “Sow Spring” are summer growing from the summer rainfall area and they usually require a drier resting period in winter. These species are best sown in late spring to midsummer when conditions are warmer.
The plants marked “Sow Autumn” are from the Mediterranean winter rainfall area of the Cape. They grow in winter & usually need drier conditions in summer.
For those of you who live in the higher latitudes (above 40°) the plants marked “Sow Autumn” should probably be sown in early spring. However, remember that the majority of the species from our Mediterranean area need a marked temperature differentiation between day & night, (day ±25°C, night ±8°C) to trigger germination. Therefore do not try to germinate these seeds in a constant temperature hot or glasshouse.
What USDA zone do I fall in?
In the plant descriptions in the catalogue, reference is made to the USDA Zones.
Here is a list of the Zones and the temperatures to which they refer. If for example, we have described a plant as USDA Zone 7, this means that the plant can probably tolerate temperatures to about -18°C
- Zone 6: -10 to 0°F or -23 to -18°C;
- Zone 7: 0 to 10°F or -18 to -12°C ;
- Zone 8: 10 to 20°F or -12 to -7°C;
- Zone 9: 20 to 30°F or -7 to -1°C;
- Zone 10: 30 to 40°F or -1 to 4°C;

DHL Express will not transport seeds with a phytosanitary certificate to some countries (we have discovered that Japan, Germany, France, and Austria are in this category). Note from DHL for USA parcels: US Customs Border Protection (CBP) can deny entry of shipments – Importer/Consignee will be contacted via US mail from CBP with more details. CBP is not legally bound to discuss their reasons with DHL as to why the parcel is denied entry into the USA.
- Air Freight:
We can send parcels by Airfreight, this is costly. You will need a freight agent as the parcel will go from Airport to Airport. We will need to know the details for your agent and the airport we are sending to, to get a quote.
- Mailwise (Tracked and untracked)
Parcels are sent via Courier from South Africa to the UK. They are then put into the Royal mail postal system. With a tracking number and posted to you. The parcel will then have the postal mark of the UK on the envelope and not a South African stamp. Your shipping fee excludes any import VAT, duties, clearance charges or penalties that may be levied at destination.

EU Seed Import Conditions
A Phytosanitary Certificate is required by the European Union.
The directive found here: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2004/105/
Additionally, there is an EU regulation, which asks for a “prior notification of consignments of certain categories of animals and goods entering the Union” about one workday in advance arrival to customs.
This regulation can be found here: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg_impl/2019/1013/
There are many regulations in the EU, partially depending on the kind and type of plant material and its usage.
We can supply a certificate at the cost of… $28.00. To send by courier you must have a Phytosanitary certificate.
USA Seed Import Conditions
The USA requires a Small Lot Seed Permit from the USDA.
https://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant-imports/buy-plants-seeds-online/seeds-additional-requirements
Your Parcel will be sent straight to your local USDA office, and they will then send it to you from there. Please send us the yellow and green label that is for your closest inspection station.
Once USDA completes their inspection, they return the package to USPS. USDA have a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the US Postal Service where the initial shipping fee covers the entire door to door trip.
To send your parcel via DHL/UPS, Fedex, the courier requires this permit and the yellow and green label.
Once USDA completes their inspection they return the package to FedEx, UPS, DHL, but USDA has no memorandum of understanding (MOU) with private freight companies, so once the inspection is complete it is up to the recipient to pay for and schedule the final leg of the journey.
To issue a Phytosanitary Certificate we need your Permit Number.
USDA sometimes requires an inspection fee (+/-$18) for your seeds too.
Please send a copy of your permit to us with a label (Please send us the yellow and green label that is for your closest inspection station).

EUR1 Certificates
An EUR1, also known as a ‘movement certificate’, enables importers in certain countries to import goods at a reduced or nil rate of import duty under trade agreements between the UK and partner countries.
Please let us know if you would like one.
It does increases clearance times, because the certificates need to be stamped by customs so it really must be worth the while for you as the customer not to pay the duties or get reduced duties.

A certificate of origin is an International Trade document that certifies that goods in a particular export shipment are wholly obtained, produced, manufactured, or processed in a particular country. It also serves as a declaration by the exporter.
Some countries require this document from us for their import paperwork. Please let us know if you do require one, there is a cost involved.
How do I search for seeds and books?
Seeds: The catalogue is divided into different categories, for example Annuals, Perennials, Trees and Shrubs, Bulbs, Succulents and so on. If you choose a particular category, you will be able to browse through all the plants listed in that group.
If you are looking for a specific plant or know the family it belongs to, you can use the search bar.
You can also do a more detailed search based on the contents of the description field. You can for example search for “edible” or “yellow” or “Zone 8”.
Books: The books are listed and have “TAGS” eg: Regional Flower Guide, Succulents, Protea, Reference etc. They can be searched for by Author or Title.
If you are looking for a book or Author, you can use the search bar.

- Zone 6: -10 to 0°F or -23 to -18°C;
- Zone 7: 0 to 10°F or -18 to -12°C ;
- Zone 8: 10 to 20°F or -12 to -7°C;
- Zone 9: 20 to 30°F or -7 to -1°C;
- Zone 10: 30 to 40°F or -1 to 4°C;
- Zone 11: above 40°F or above 4°C.
